Our museum quality frames are handmade to order.
The studio features a wide range of sustainably sourced timbers and metals with a variety of finishes including custom stains and gilding. All carried out by artisan craftspeople in the UK.
We work closely with conservators and use the highest grade museum materials to ensure the protection and longevity of artwork.
Matt is a master framer who has advised on major exhibitions for public galleries including Tate, The National Portrait Gallery, V&A, British Museum and numerous private collections. He works with conservators and artwork restorers to ensure artwork is framed to the highest conservation standards.
Our Approach
With over 35 years’ experience in the art world, we take the greatest care with every artwork entrusted to us. We work exclusively with the highest-quality conservation and museum-grade materials to ensure each piece is properly protected and preserved. We pride ourselves on setting the benchmark for excellence in the design and presentation of art and photography.
We are a small, independent studio and work by appointment only, allowing us to give each project the time, attention and care it deserves. Availability is therefore limited, and we are currently booked several weeks in advance. We believe exceptional work is worth waiting for, and our clients value the considered, highly personal approach that comes from a studio that never overextends itself.
Each appointment lasts approximately 60 minutes, during which we discuss the artwork’s condition and history, frame design and finish, and the most appropriate options for mounting, glazing and backing. As every frame is handmade, we advise allowing a minimum of three weeks for production.
How much are our frames?
It’s often the first question we’re asked, but as every frame we produce is custom made to order, we don’t work from a fixed price list. Each frame is handcrafted entirely from scratch — we never use pre-run or factory-manufactured mouldings. We are uncompromising in our standards, from the careful selection of timber through to how it is run, joined, sanded, finished and ultimately how the artwork is presented within the frame.
All of our framing is fully reversible, and we work exclusively with museum-standard conservation techniques. Glazing is an equally important part of the process, and we offer a carefully considered range of options, including low-reflective and UV-filtering glass.
This level of craftsmanship and care does come at a higher cost than a high-street framer, but for those who are serious about their art, the difference is evident. As a very general guide, our framing prices begin at approximately £250.
Frame Research Service
We have a digital archive of frames produced by our former business John Jones Framing that dates back to 2004. If you require information on a frame with a black John Jones label, we offer a look up service.
